The Way We Never Were
It definitely irritates me when people talk about how peaceful the world used to be. Hey, you know what would have happened to me in the 1950s, the "good old days"? I would have been accused of being a Communist, and probably arrested. The Cold War sure was a peaceful, carefree time in America.
I'll just say this: I kind of bet the only people who miss Mayberry are white. I saw it put this way just today: "Mayberry is shorthand for a simpler time. And as we all know—we all know this, right?—a “simpler time” is shorthand for a time when white people didn’t have to think about whether they were treating nonwhite people (or women) like humans."
