Maybe this is why so many people switch to WordPress.

I decided I should add the "like" button to my posts, for all you lazy non-commenters who still claim to love reading my blog. ;) (Just kidding, guys. I love you all.) But today I went to do that, and discovered that I already did it a long time ago. It's saved in my settings that way--but it doesn't appear on my blog. I have no idea why; I thought for a minute that it might be my template overriding the Blogger changes, but I've now ruled that out since my template switch was really recent and the "like" button setting has been that way for much longer. Boo, Blogger.

  1. Blogger sucks sometimes, but is is nice that it is pretty simple to use. I find people read and don't even necessarily come over to a blog from google reader or wherever they read it from. I sometimes don't get a lot of comments other than from my mom and mother in law. For a while it would bum me out and then I finally realized that writing was for me and that I needed to not care who read it or didn't read it. Maybe you need to realize why you blog. If it is for readers and they aren't reading then it isn't good for you, but if you do it for you then keep at it. I bet a lot more people are reading than you realize. I tend to not comment much since I read freakin a thousand blogs. I try to comment on about 5 blogs a day and I have over 150 posts to read daily so if others are like me they are reading and just don't have time to comment. I am hoping to get my blog in print form so that it is a memory of me for my posterity. Think of it that way too. Will your children and grandchildren get a kick out of what you say? I bet they will. Keep it up for you. And for me!

  2. That's exactly what I went offline to do, Laura, trying to learn to do things more for myself. Also--good gravy, I can't believe you read 150 posts every day! I think you should probably be exempt from commenting on my blog--I'm impressed that you comment as much as you do! :)

  3. I use blogger, and had no trouble adding a "like" button after visiting this site:

    http://www.bloggerplugins.org/2010/04/facebook-like-button-for-blogger.html

If you follow all the directions there, it should work just fine. I prefer blogger because I can tweak the html a lot more easily than wordpress.

Though, that may have changed recently.

  4. Also, with regards to people reading, I keep an eye on my feedburner stats, because I figure that a lot of people may be reading and not commenting, which is okay with me because I see that people are at least reading. :)

  5. Thanks for the link, I checked it out. It looks like those are Facebook "like" buttons, though, and that's not exactly what I want. I guess it's a "reaction" button on Blogger, not a "like" button, since it doesn't necessarily have to say like. (We included it on this blog, in case you're not sure what I'm talking about--http://becominglovely.blogspot.com/). I wonder if I should do the Facebook button, since the Blogger one isn't working...

  6. Ah... I see. You should be able to turn on the reaction buttons in your layout settings. So first, go to your layout, and edit the "posts" box in your layout menu. You should be able to turn them on there.

However, sometimes if you tweak with the template when you have the widgets expanded, it kind of breaks it. So what you need to do is this, be aware of any widgets you have fiddled with, go to you template, edit html, then click on "http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.415473826625.196157.51161286625&type=1". This should reset your widgets and fix your problem. After you hit the reset button on your widgets, go to your blogger layout, click edit on your blog posts, and select that you want to show the reactions buttons. Fiddle and organize anything in your post settings that you want, before you tweak with the html with the widget templates expanded.

    Hope this helps!
