Remember this book? I read it about a month ago?
Yesterday Mike and I went to church with our friends Lori and Christian. They asked us a few weeks ago if we'd want to go with them sometime, and on the week that we ended up going, this guy ---> was there! Guest speaking!
It was random.

So..how was he? Did you have any Ha-ha! moment?
ReplyDeleteNot like when I read the book. :) But he did say several interesting things, like that parents are often too quick to "outsource" their kids into activities like playing sports, taking lessons, etc. I'd never even thought of that before, but I decided that I totally agree.
ReplyDeleteMike and I have discussed what kinds of things we'll probably have our kids do--playing a sport, taking piano lessons, the usual--but we also don't want every minute of their schedules to be planned out doing those things. Kids need to just be at home sometimes, to play with their siblings or read or spend time with family. So I thought that was a really great point.
I agree with you. Our kids took swimming classes and such. I'd try something new occasionally through community classes like clogging (Dan and Liz, later Anna), archery (Mike), self-defense (the older 3) which is nice because it gives them a chance to try something new. They had swimming lessons and piano lessons. We were very limited by money though. Kids used to be able to entertain themselves more readily because there were no video games and such to do it for them. They were likely to ride bikes, play with actual toys and play games with other children etc. Anna is the only one who played on an actual soccer team for a year with her friend Michelle. She enjoyed it for didn't want to repeat it unless she could play with that same coach and group of girls. She saw some of the girls on other teams being stereotypical mean and stupid and coaches who yelled and were out for blood and plain would try to cheat. So it wasn't worth it to her. But it was fun for a year. She did have an amazing team and they won the championship while actually having fun :D
